Sister Carmen Sugiyama spent many years as a nurse and a nursing supervisor before discovering her gift as a sculptor and painter. After retirement from health services, Carmen went on to receive a Master’s Degree in Art Therapy. She then ministered at the crystal Spring Rehabilitation Center with people with organic, stroke and head injuries and at the Kimochi Home and Day Center for the Elderly in the Japan Center of San Francisco.

Sister Sharon Krenn was an elementary school teacher for her early years in Mercy. In 1982 she took a Clinical Pastoral Education course at St. Mary's Medical Center and then went into the pastoral care department there until 1998. In addition to being a hospital chaplain, she was a grief counselor including AIDS bereavement. In 1998 Parkinson's disease made it necessary for her to come to Marian Care Center, but while there she has developed her art work.
